Queen Anne Walnut Antique Side Chair, circa 1725-1740

About the Item

Retaining a wonderful early surface, the worn walnut is beautifully patinated with a rubbed warmth throughout that is most striking. The variform splat is of a somewhat typical shape for the era, though with a somewhat elongated "beak" under the yoke rail that locks in the stiles with two singular wooden pegs on either side. The stiles are flat on the front and bevelled on the back, continuing in a single backswept piece into the block-and-post legs - the form of these is quite early, a transitional leg from the William and Mary era where the block the back stretcher drops into on either side would eventually be eliminated in favor of an undisturbed post over the stretchers. The seat frame is locked together entirely with double-pegged tenon-mortise joinery, a technique that has proven most effective despite the lack of any corner bracing in the chair - the support of the stretcher allows the frame to remain thin and light without additional support. Along the back edge of the seat rests the applied shoe, into which the splat is tenoned. The front legs are beautifully cabriole, flowing in a soft cyma curve into rimmed and padded feet - most notable though are the inverted c-scrolls that embellish the front legs so effectively. These continue into the scrolled volutes of the leg returns. In terms of origin, it is a difficult chair to isolate with certainty as some elements are certainly suggestive of a Massachusetts origin while others are suggestive of an English origin. The stretchers are of a form regularly employed in the New England States and New York, the lack of bracket responds (where the apron joins the stile) is a more typically English feature. Rhode Island is also a possibility, where the elongated beak in the splat is more common and the C-scroll in the interior of the legs more firmly established in the region. As a result, we have left the origin as quite broad for further study. It is a most attractive side chair that will certainly be cherished by any collector of early works of the Queen Anne era. Measurements: 21" D x 22 1/4" W x 40" H; 18 1/2" H to seat Condition Report: Replaced slip seat. All leg returns are replaced. Added peg to rear left seat frame joint. Very early but not original surface. Upholstery in excellent condition. Stretcher with a screw repair to the front right leg.
