    A pair of English Art Deco walnut side chairs with gold finished cloud-form back splats. Made by the Rowley Gallery. Maker's labels: "Modern Decoration, Rowley, Church St W8." Circa 1930's. The chairs are made of solid walnut and have wonderful cloud-form back splats, which are gold coloured leaf finish over gesso. There are some signs of use to the original finish, with water marks in places to the walnut frames. The gold coloured finish also shows nibbles and signs of use. The chairs have been waxed. The seats have be reupholstered and covered in Designer's Guild velvet - Trentino, in Raven colour. Both chairs are very sturdy with no loose joints. The Rowley Gallery was founded in 1898 by Albert James Rowley (1875-1944) and his wife Emma Hamm as a small business specialising in picture framing, mounting, restoration, carving, gilding and exhibitions of paintings. Rowley employed different artists to design for him, his most famous was Sir Frank Brangwyn. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Rowley Gallery became renowned for its inlay wood panels...
