Elegant Pair of 1950s Italian Easy Chairs Attributed to Gastone Rinaldi

About the Item

Elegant pair of 1950s Italian easy chairs attributed to Italian designer Gastone Rinaldi (1920-2006). Lovely subtle yet complex sculptural form finished in grey wool upholstery with typical Rinaldi style bent tubular form structure combined with Italian Pirelli rubber strapping and enamelled steel legs. These chairs have been completely reupholstered including new foam. The upholstery has been renewed with respect to the original artisan handicraft involved, ie. a lot of expensive hand stitching etc. Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua on 16 November 1920. In 1916 his father Mario had established RIMA, a company for the production of metal furniture. In 1948, together with his brother Giorgio, he took over the management from his father. He then met Gio Ponti and in 1950 he designed the chairs (DU10 and DU11) for the hospital section of the IX Milan Trienniale exhibition. At the same Triennial, his DU9 chair was also presented. The armchairs for the Piccolo theatre of Milan followed, with Zanuso. In 1954, he won the Compasso d’Oro for the chair DU30. He participated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli and Gardella in designing furniture for the American firm Altamira. He then worked with Carlo Mollino on the design of chairs for the Molinette Hospital of Turin. In 1957, the armchair DU41 won the silver medal at the XI Triennial.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Reupholstered in wool with new foam, original high quality Pirelli strapping in good order. Enamelled steel legs have been left in their original finish to retain originality and exhibit signs of usual wear commensurate with age.
