Mid-Century Spanish Valenti Leather Chair by Pierre Lottier, Spain, 1950s

$2,200per item

About

This stunning slipper chair is a mid-century piece in a neoclassical style that is the result of the collaboration of French design and Spanish manufacturing. With its great graphic expression, this chair is iconic of both Valenti and Lottier. Pierre Lottier was a French designer - and the lover of Jean Cocteau - who emigrated to Spain in the early 20th century. Most notably, he designed the Barcelona residence of American actress Ava Gardner. This iconic wood and leather chair is Lottier’s most famous design, that stands on the equally acclaimed frame by Valenti. The original leather upholstery is the stand-out element of this chair both in terms of visual and technical terms. The woven leather straps tap into the modernist aesthetic while harmoniously complementing the more classical looking structure. The interlaced leather straps comprising the back and seat are secured to the frame with decorative brass studs. The leather has a beautiful patina throughout that gives this chair an elemental look. The lower structure bears exceptionally unique shapes; the legs are arranged in a classical X-form with the neoclassical curved ends and are connected by two, sculpted stretchers. Valenti is historical company, that opened in 1798 in Barcelona with a strong tradition of handcrafting. The company first functioned as a silversmith workshop, but as the family needed to show the new creations of the company, they often travelled abroad searching for furniture to expose them properly. Eventually, in an attempt to diversify the production, Valenti started creating furniture in collaboration with designers in a moment in which Barcelona was experiencing its modernist burst.
