About the Item

Unique and highly desirable set of two Antique Certified Scholar's Cap Yoke - Back Armchairs in Black Laquered Chinese Elmwood and Rattan. Signature curves and details and beautifully curved, protruding armrests that are distinctive of this design. This chair design was one of the first to appear in China, with pictorial records dating back to as early as the 6th century. The name 'Yoke-Back' refers to the shape of the curved headrest, but the style is also known as an 'Official's Hat' chair as the headrest was also thought to resemble the winged hats of Chinese mandarins of the Ming dynasty. Made from solid elm wood with a rattan seat. Great individually in a bedroom or living room as a statement piece, or use them at the head of our dining tables.
Age: Qing Dynasty, circa 1850 A. D. A rare find. Can be combined with a desk and bookshelf available from our portfolio.
