Pair of French Modern Neoclassical Leather Lounge / Slipper Chairs, Andre Arbus

About the Item

An Elegant and Timeless Pair of French Mid-Century Modern Neoclassical Lounge or Slipper Chairs in a solid hardwood frame and covered in a glove-like leather. These chairs are derived from neoclassical design ideas that are several centuries old. They are also characteristic of "Butaque,” the Mexican name for the low, inclined J-shaped wooden lounger prevalent in parts of Latin America, refers to a shape originating in the 16th century, a colonial-era cross between traditional Spanish hip-joint armchairs and pre-Columbian duhos". French Art Deco and Modern Neoclassical designers such Andre Arbus, Jean-Charles Moreux, Jacques Quinet and Jacques Adnet re-interpreted these ideas, taking their central J form aesthetic and recasting it in a modern context. This is a typical male and female pair of French chairs with male chair of the set having slightly different dimensions and styling from the female. Dimensions chair #1: H 30.5 x W 17.75 x D 25 and Chair #2: H 29.5 x W 18 x D 25. Additional References: Armchairs, Club Chairs, Pierre Lottier, Gio Ponti, Paolo Buffa, Osvaldo Borsani, Ico Parisi, Clara Porset.
