19th Century Swedish Gustavian Style Painted Stickback Sofa Bench with Lift Seat

About the Item

A mid-19th century Swedish Gustavian style painted wood stick back kitchen sofa or bench, circa 1850s. Scraped to the original off white paint, this antique sofa bench is typical of the Swedish desire for light and soft colors that helped bring light to rooms during the very dark winters in Scandanavia. Showcasing the stylistic characteristics of the Gustavian era, it features carved flat spindles or slats topped with petite carved finials adorning the back and arm supports and a long rectangular upholstered lift seat that opens to reveal a convenient storage compartment. Raised on six short tapered feet. For hundreds of years, kitchen sofas were very common in Swedish homes. Acting as a sofa or bench for the kitchen table, they could also be used as an additional bed for the kitchen staff to rest. Found in all types of homes, from noble estates to rustic country cottages, these versatile benches can be used to store blankets, toys and games, linens, shoes or other items. With its clean lines and discreetly carved décor, this Swedish Gustavian sofa bench will bring a touch of classical elegance to any home, whether placed in a living room, kitchen, bedroom, foyer or mudroom! Just add some nice throw pillows and make it your own! The Gustavian furniture style takes its roots in the Louis XVI era. Swedish King Gustav III, who came to the throne in 1772, had attended the court of Louis XVI in Versailles while living in Paris. He was inspired by French art and fashion and had a passion for furniture. He brought the stylings of the French Court back to Sweden and it gradually grew into the Gustavian style that is now so beloved worldwide. Gustavian design had strong neoclassical leanings based on symmetry, straight lines, columns, carved detailing and Greco-Roman motifs but soon developed a very Swedish character all of its own – so much less frou frou than the similar French pieces that had provided the inspiration.
