Acerbis Free System Sofa by Claudio Salocchi

About the Item

In 1973, Claudio Salocchi designed Free System: a system of padded furniture deriving from the concept of “operated flooring”, or tatami, where the padded units could be placed freely side by side. With its completely modular and sectional elements and from the perspective of an optimal use of space, we can view Free System as the embodiment of the modern house utopia. A programme of padded furniture that goes beyond the sofa model, Free System presents a series of elements (tatami, pouf and seat with different and interchangeable backrests) that make up a modular system that can be arranged in a variety of combinations. Available elements _ seat module with curved backrest: L100 D100 H74, seat H39 cm; _ seat module with inclined backrest: L100 D100 H74, seat H39 cm; _ pouf module: L100 D100 H39 cm; _ tatami module: L100 D100 H14 cm; The upholstered modules can be joined together to create infinite unlimited, continual, different configurations, creating islands or linear, more regular, ordinary compositions. The seat modules can also be used individually as pouf or tatami elements. Available upholstery Maia (cat.B), Anima (cat.C), Natura (cat.D), Paradise (cat.E), Moss, (cat.G) and Nabuk.

    By Roberto Monsani, Acerbis
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Created in 1975 by Florentine architect Roberto Monsani, Life is a modular sofa and an armchair with a soft seat. The compact design allows great versatility, while the large seat gives a pleasant cosy feeling. Providing a combination of full and empty spaces, it is an architecture that affects the space creating a harmonious balance between form and function. Originally created with a plexiglass shell, which was avant-garde for the time, today’s version reverses the direction towards the cabinetmakers’ world and expertise. Structure and upholstery An upholstered system with modular elements, made of veneered, brushed open grain curved birch plywood in black ash and dark stained walnut finishes. A hidden element hooking system. The backrest and seat cushions are in polyurethane foam with feather upholstery. The upholstery fabric enhances its softness, covers the sofa in all its parts and is completely removable. Possibility of purchasing additional cover upholstery. The following elements are available: seat module, pouf S and pouf M. Roberto Monsani started his professional career in Florence by designing homes and urban development plans in Tuscany. • Loveseat Sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
    By Sormani, Claudio Salocchi
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered loveseat sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features a graceful chrome frame with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching pair of club chairs available in another listing. The graceful frame shares a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However this Sormani sofa features some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair two-seater couch is an amazing opportunity. This Cassina LC2 / LC3 loveseat...
