Bodil Kjaer Sofa in Black Leather and Steel

About the Item

Bodil Kjaer for Hovedstadens Møbelfabrik, sofa model 71, leather, steel, Denmark, 1959. A signature piece of Bodil Kjaer, designed in 1959. Kjaer conceived this sofa together with a lounge chair for use in public spaces of contemporary architecture. Back then, well-known architects placed these pieces in their buildings, such as Paul Rudolph and Marcel Breuer. This sofa is executed in thick black leather and steel. The seat and back are smoothly upholstered and complement the steel frame wonderfully. Overall, the curved brushed steel frame enhances the strict, sharp lines of the seat. This combination is typical for Danish design as it is quintessential Modernist. The sofa is comfortable and modest in its design and is finished at the back with the same thick leather meaning that it can be used as a freestanding piece. Bodil Kjaer (1932-) is trained as an architect and is known mostly known for her designs in noble woods combined with a modern and sleek chrome base. The most important part of her furniture design career was from 1959-1964. She is mainly recognized for her flexible office furniture, designed in the 1960s. Her design language is greatly inspired by the Modernist masters such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Her furniture has been greatly used in public buildings such as Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Please note that the leather is in fair condition with loose seams and visible wear. The foam needs to be replaced. Reupholstery is possible before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.

Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Sofa Daybed in Black Leather and Steel
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, sofa or daybed, leather, chrome-plated steel, Austria, 1960s. This mid-century modern sofa is designed by the talented Austrian furniture designer Johannes Spalt. The design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and angular shapes noticeable in the body of the seat and the chromed steel base, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat in a graceful way, which establish an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. The tufted seat with buttons is upholstered in black leather. As outcome, this creates more visual interest and adds a graphical touch to the quite simplistic design. By only one hand movement the 'Constance' transforms from a comfortable sofa to daybed. A very elegant and also nifty technique. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
