Danish 2 Seater Sofa Illum Wikkelsø For Niels Eilersen Black Leather Teak 1960s

About the Item

New Stock ✅ Danish Two Seat Sofa by Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen Black Leather Teak 1960s Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM Illum Wikkelso has a legacy for creating some of the finest Danish mid-century furniture; this sculpted organic sofa is no exception. A generous teak frame with highly sculpted ribbon-like armrests define this iconic design. The design details are beautiful, with the beautiful twist in the armrest or the original black upholstery in genuine leather. The legs, which taper somewhat towards each other at the bottom, are not only optically strong, but also constructively a real challenge, they are proof that both design and construction are of an exceptionally high level. Like most Danish designers at the time, Wikkelsø studied cabinetry, graduating from the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. He later held positions with the cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. In 1944, Wikkelsø moved to Århus to work as an interior designer. In 1954, he began designing his own furniture and, a few years later, established a workshop. Like many of his Danish contemporaries Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, and Hans Wegner, for example Wikkelsø’s designs emphasize formal simplicity and biomorphic silhouettes. Wikkelsø’s background in cabinetry engendered in him a profound understanding of materials and an excellent attention to detail. Working with teak and rosewood, he captured delicately sculptural forms. Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last while cradling the body and pleasing the eye. Capella chair by Illum Wikkels with new upholstery in gorgeous white fabric, created in 1959 and produced by N. Eilersen in the 1960s. From the 1940s to the late 1960s, Sren Willadsen was a Danish furniture maker. Willadsen primarily made seats, armchairs, chairs, and couches for Danish designers such Solmer Vedel, Finn Juhl, Illum Wikkels, and Nana Ditzel. Wikkelso (spelled Wikkels) is a lesser-known Scandinavian designer than Hans J Wegner or Borge Mogensen. Nonetheless, he made significant contributions to the growth of Scandinavian design in the 1950s and 1960s. Wikkelso, like many other designers of his generation, began his work as a cabinetmaker in 1938. He went on to study at the Danish School of Design, where he graduated in 1941. Following graduation, After graduating he held positions with the cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. A few years later, Wikkelso moved to Aarhus (second largest city in Denmark) where he worked as an interior designer. When Wikkelso began designing his own furniture in 1954, his career really took off. A few years later he started his own workshop. His background in cabinetry meant he had an very good understanding of the material he worked with (mostly rosewood and teak). The Illum Wikkelsø Capella chair...
