Fine English William IV Mahogany Antique Sofa, circa 1830-1850

About the Item

Particularly striking in this finely designed sofa is the deep and worn patination of the surface - probably at least partially original and quite early throughout, the finish has a wonderful oxidization to it with alligatoring and crackling in the crevices that is most attractive. It has layers of wax that lend a certain translucence to the surface. The design is well planned and results in an airy classicism, borrowing heavily from the Regency period while introducing a boldness and flair that firmly isolates it in the William IV era. The crest is active, the oversize-reeded molding curving out from the centermost point and rising into scrolled arches that divide the crest into three planes. Terminating the arches are repeating-circle rosettes that are mirrored in the scrolled arms of the sofa. The entire sofa rests over sabre legs terminating in carved lion paw feet over brass castors. Any serious collector of fine English furniture will certainly be pleased by this warm and well preserved sofa. It is a rich classical form that will certainly be an enjoyable strike point for any formal sitting room. Measurements: 87" W x 24" D x 38 3/4" H; 21" H to seat Condition Report: Very old finish with possibly original remnants preserved under wax, all surfaces wonderfully worn and patinated. All legs with repairs and supporting brackets added behind for strength. Front left foot with loss to the inside applied toe. Upholstery is in poor condition and must be changed (stained, discolored, heavily worn). Upholstery has not been removed to examine structure. The sofa remains sturdy and strong in all joints.
