A handsome leather covered vintage Chesterfield sofa from England c. 1940. The elaborate detail on this example includes a double row of button tufting on the lower seat section as well as nail head trim that descends to the floor at each arm as well as the three bun feet that support the sofa at the front and the square frame feet at the back. Although the origin of the term Chesterfield is popularly ascribed to Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1693-1773) as being the first to commission a piece of furniture with deep buttonholes and quilted leather there is no surviving example that is tied definitively to him. But a true Chesterfield must have the same height back and arms and feature the tufted back, arms and lower seat base in leather to be described properly. The back and arms of a Chesterfield are also quite deep and encourage sitting there as well as the seat when part of a large gathering. One of the best aspects of this sofa is the obvious creasing to the leather across the front of the seat. This type of wear takes years of daily use to achieve in a natural manner and cannot be artificially faked with any success. Also this sofa has a single fixed cushion that eliminates the constant plumping required by loose cushions. The single fixed cushion also enabled the original craftsman to use the distinctive deep button tufting on all the surfaces of the sofa from the back and sides to the seat itself and continuing to the lower seat deck. The beauty of the leather shows in the variety of wear patterns across the entire surface where some areas remain smooth from no wear to the areas with the most use that possess the most intriguing texture. All Chesterfield sofas were designed to be placed within the centre of a room where they could be seen from any angle and this sofa is no exception as the back is distinguished with a line of nail head trim along its entire edge along the floor. The slight elevation of the sofa allows the gleam of the nail heads to be seen clearly and gives importance to the continuous line of nail head trim that stretches across the front, sides and back.
