Mid-Century Modern Sofa by a Danish Cabinetmaker, Denmark, ca 1950s

About the Item

This two-seater Danish sofa has an elegant, modern edge that is unmistakeable of the era. The design features clean, sharp angles and rounded lines to create a perfect balance that shows why Danish cabinetmakers are still widely renowned today. Mid-century modern's timeless appeal has made it a go-to for designers and homeowners alike, as furniture in this style can be understated but still stand out in almost any space. This is true for this sofa as well. The design is a study in simplicity: its square appearance gives it a unique, sleek look with minimal decor elements and short, square legs. The simple blend of straight lines, natural curves and smooth surfaces work together to create something that’s organic, elegant and unembellished. The wood lines highlight the edges of the sofa, especially the outward curving square arms that are nearly the same height as the back. This curve defines the profile of the sofa, breaking the otherwise straight lines. Furthermore, it opens up the sofa visually, driving the focus to the upholstered seat and back cushion. The design is completed by the short, exotic wood legs with a beautiful pattern and grain. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, the maker of this sofa maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. Saying mid-century modern's had a revival would be a serious understatement. In reality, the designs have never gone out of style completely especially in Scandinavia. Danish cabinetmaker pieces are timeless thanks to the expert craftsmanship, the visual, and the material quality. This two-seater sofa showcases this timelessness with its modern design and premium upholstery. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 52.55 in W x 27.75 in D x 28.14 in H; Seat height 14.96 in 133.5 cm W x 70.5 cm D x 71.5 cm H; Seat height 38 cm About the designer: This Danish-made sofa reflects the core traditions and ideals of Danish design. Mid-century pieces such as this sofa were of great design, using fantastic wood like teak or beech. The era was the heyday of the production by master craftsmen. Mid-century Danish design is world-famous for the partnership between designer and manufacturer, resulting in ground-breaking creations. A master cabinetmaker is not a carpenter, as this was a rare breed of craftsman who had to be recognized by the Danish government after several years of toiling at his craft, as well as having to ace gruelling design competitions before becoming a master cabinetmaker. Since Denmark was a special instance of tempered industrialization, it managed to preserve sound traditions and continue to safeguard values of craftsmanship, materiality and usability. Today, Danish furniture is sought after by collectors for its classic looks, storied designs and solid quality, works that are truly soulful and timeless. ~H. Svensk design, “Swedish design”, is unquestionably a conventional and popular branding device, with many companies explicitly promoting their products as examples of god design, “good design”. But svensk design does not simply represent “good” design made in Sweden, it also projects a powerful, concrete rendering of a sort of essentialized “Swedishness” embedded in objects, such as this sofa. Rounded out lines, unexpected curvature and innovative shapes from every angle define the design of this model. The aesthetic recalls classic English upholstered furniture...
