Rare Dominique Prevost & Claude Favriau Sofa Bench in Yellow Fiberglass

About the Item

Dominique Prevost & Claude Favriau for Édition France Design, sofa or bench, fiberglass, rubber, France, 1970 Made in 1970, this bench or sofa is designed by Dominique Prevost & Claude Favriau for Édition France Design. This piece of furniture is of limited availability and hardly presents itself on the market. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was an explosion of shapes, colors, and materials in decorative arts. The use of a bright color and plastics in this design places the bench in the Pop Art era, reminiscent of the contemporaneous experimentation of avant-garde sculptors. Designers moved away from traditional production methods towards innovative design techniques. Furniture from the 1960s and 1970s was influenced by advancements in technology, leading to a wider variety of materials being used. Designers began to incorporate new materials, such as inflatable PVC, disposable cardboard, latex and polyester foam, into furniture design. These materials allowed for the creation of soft, organic shapes that promoted relaxation and comfort. Additionally, plastic in various forms, including hard, smooth, and shiny, became popular, as well as intense, fashionable colors. American, Italian, and Finnish designers were particularly successful in promoting and distributing plastic furniture. In contrast with the French architects and designers that often created prototypes or limited-edition pieces produced by small workshops that were not widely distributed. However, there were some exceptions, such as Olivier Mourgue's 'Djinn' series made of polyester foam and Pierre Paulin's seats made of latex foam, which were successful and produced on a larger scale. Despite this, plastic materials have become a common feature in French furniture design. They are popular among young designers, and are appreciated for their smooth forms and vibrant colors that align with the Op Art and Pop Art trends in contemporary art. The bench reflects the duo's deep interest in experimenting with new materials and assemblage techniques. The construction is executed in fiberglass which allowed for the creation for smooth, round finishes seen in the backrest and seating area, simultaneously outlining three individual seats. The black rubber band adds more strength to the sofa, enhancing the remarkable interplay of shapes and materials. Please note that the fiberglass contains some scratches.
