Yrjö Kukkapuro Ateljee Sofa, Haimi, Finland, 1964

About the Item

“Does it make any sense to design a chair which is not good to sit on” is the mantra of Finnish designer Yrjö Kukkapuro (born 1933). His aim to unite beauty with ergonomics in furniture has led to a number of his designs becoming classics. One example of this is the Ateljee sofa series which has been selected by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and MoMA in New York as iconic mid-century products. A masterpiece of minimalistic serenity, the sofa was inspired by the structure of a steel-framed bed. Later models were set upon a metal tubular frame clad with wooden panels, but this early version is designed with all-wooden elements. It has recently been reupholstered in a stunning Genova black leather.
