Alexander Ritchie. a Glasgow School Stool with Carved Celtic Decoration

About the Item

Alexander Ritchie of Iona. A rare Arts & Crafts Glasgow School stool with carved Celtic interlacing decoration to the seat, and to the base. The four upright are further carved with Celtic crosses to the tops and bottoms of all of those uprights. A sturdy and comfortable stool in wonderful original condition. Born in Tobermory on Mull, Alexander Ritchie grew up in the Scottish islands, where the sea was never too far away from him. He trained as a marine engineer, and his early days took him around the world with the British India Steam Shipping Company. In his 40s he decided to take classes at The Glasgow School of Art where he met his wife Euphemia Catherine Thomson and where they both perfected their own Celtic Glasgow Style of making furniture and silver Jewelry mainly for the tourist trade in Iona.
