Contemporary Orange Resin Metropolis Stool by Laurids Gallée

About the Item

The name derives from Fritz Lang's 1920's masterpiece and the repetitive structures that draw the movies' cityscape were a big inspiration for the design. The aim was to create a material that reflects the rythm of modern architectural construction, something created out of many individual building blocks, like bricks or tiles. Adding transparency highlights all the hidden anatomy, and therefor create a different pattern from any angle. This results in a kind of prismatic effect, gathering and reflecting light within and out of the object. This material is the base of the project, the range of possible applications is wide. For now the focus is on building simple pieces of furniture. Laurids worked as a craftsman in a resin production company for some years, so for this project he was curious to how far he could push what is possible with the material and his skills. This is an ongoing project, where he constantly aims to add new pieces to the collection. Unless stated otherwise the mentioned price is for a frosted surface finish. It is possible to produce most pieces with a polished, glass-like surface finish, this option will increase the price by 20%. Laurids Gallée (1989) is an Austrian designer based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. From early childhood he was exposed to creative practices, and after briefly studying anthropology, he graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015. He spent the following years learning different manufacturing techniques, as a craftsman in art and design production. In 2017 he started his own studio in Rotterdam; his work explores traditional and folkloric elements to enter modern materiality, while always considering today’s advanced manufacturing processes to create a contemporary fusion.
