Domingos Tótora "Estação" Stools, Brazil 2019

About the Item

The Maria de Fé Station, in the designer's hometown of Minas Gerais, inspires this pair of delicate creations that is part of the Egrégora line, launched exclusively by dpot. “Trails that cross paths, overcome distances and find an address: the Maria da Fé Station.” This is how the Minas Gerais designer Domingos Tótora talks about the inspiration for these stools that integrate the Egrégora line, created by him in partnership with the Alagoan architect and urban planner Rodrigo Ambrosio. Handcrafted with recycled kraft paper – Tótora’s preferred material – and metal, the Estação stool is one of the pieces in the collection that unites the maturity of the Minas Gerais designer’s work, with his pieces that challenge the border between art and design and the contemporaneity of Ambrosio's language. This is most apparent in the bodies’ organic appearance and impeccable balance of shapes, forms and materials. The metal wire legs create an almost creature-like sculptural look that immediately draws the eyes. The round seats serve as their meeting points with a highly textured look; the pattern of the recycled material is naturally unique with a multitude of colours. The inspiration to give life to delicate and poetic pieces is a scenario that is beyond familiar to the Minas Gerais designer: “In a way, it's a continuation of my journey plus Rodrigo's conceptual experience,” he says. “The conductor wire is the soil, the earth, everything that refers to the ground, in addition to the relief and organic forms.” With his unique mindset and initiative, Domingos Tótora’s creations became a reference in the Brazilian market. The production process of Tótora’s designs is 100% manual and the cardboard he uses is fully recycled, making these stools not only dear to the eye, but also to the environment. Born and raised in the mountainous region of Maria da Fé, nature is an essential part of Tótora’s aesthetic. Being true to nature means that imperfections are a welcome part of Tótora’s designs, embracing asymmetry and unevenness in the spirit of wabi-sabi. Following his studies in São Paulo, Tótora found inspiration on the streets in the form of discarded cardboards. He created a process in which cardboard can be recycled by breaking it down to small pieces, transforming it to cellulose plaster. With the addition of water, glue and natural pigments, the cardboard can be shaped into new forms. Through this sustainable process, waste cardboards are turned into a wood-like material. Tótora and his small team believe sustainability happens through actions and not words. His studio, Domingos Tótora Estúdio de Artes Design, was founded in 2005 in his hometown, Maria da Fé. The beauty of his work manifests itself in its philosophy of creation and respect for the environment. The production process of Tótora’s designs is 100% manual and the cardboard he uses is fully recycled. Domingos Tótora is a true mixture of artist, designer, and craftsman. In recent years, the originality and elegance of his creations have been recognized in several exhibitions.
