Four René Herbst Sandows stools for Herbst studio, France 1927
About the Item
Suite of four high stools Sandows model after Rene Herbst.
The "SANDOWS" high stool after Rene HERBST. Its structure is in chromed tubular metal and the seat is made of bungee cords in different colors (red, yellow, blue and green). It features a cross brace at the front and rear, as well as a visible center brace at the base. These struts form an H-shape, ensuring that the overall structure of the stool is well supported. Completely removable
René Herbst (1891-1982) was a French designer who studied in London, Frankfurt and Russia. He founded Établissements René Herbst in Paris and exhibited at the seminal “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” in 1925, a show that defined the Art Déco style. Herbst later rebelled against the decorative impulses of Art Déco by co-founding the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) with Robert Mallet-Stevens, Francis Jourdain, and others. The ‘Sandows’ are a good exemplar of Herbst’s design philosophy at the height of his powers: they are explicitly functional and bold yet retain a clear sense of modernist style. The frames are nickel-plated tubular steel and the seat and back are made from rubber strips stretched taut and fastened to the frame by hooks. Herbst unveiled the ‘Sandows’ at the 1929 Salon d’Automne, the same show in which with Le Corbusier first showed his own radical new tubular steel-framed furniture.
These colourful and playful editions were produced later in the twentieth century (in the 1980s). The Sandows stools are an iconic design in the history of the modern movement and iterations of this design are held by MoMA and other internationally renowned institutions.
