Gilbert Marklund "Jonte" Stools for Furusnickaren AB, Sweden 1970s

About the Item

Designed in 1969, these so-called “Jonte” pine stools are the Swedish designer’s signature models. The design is brilliant in its simplicity, merging traditional Swedish craftsmanship with the strong influences of the modernist movement that swept through Scandinavia in the previous decades. Swedish furniture and interior design culture went through dramatic changes during the 1970s. The effects of the late 60s rebellious view of design, production, and consumption had an impact in the form of freer furnishings and resource-efficient furniture in simpler materials, seen in these stools as well. As such, these well-formed stools are dominated by their solid pine constructions that are immediately recognizable. It is the overreaching sides and distinctively shaped, split seats that create this look. The top of the sides reach over the seat that is quite unusual for stools in general. In a perfectly symmetrical arrangement, the widening legs are connected solely by the seats and the horizontal parts on which they sit. The ergonomic seats have an interesting shape that is split in the middle, showcasing the stretcher just under them that has a similarly carved shape. This design feature demonstrates how much thought went into the design, and attention to the woodworking. Executed entirely in solid pine, the structure’s versatile shapes and forms really stand out. The concave seat breaks the rigour of the design and adds much flair. The craftsmanship of Gilbert Marklund, and his own firm, Furusnickaren AB (literally ‘the pine carpenter’) is evident in the joinery technique, as these stools have no visible joints at all. • Pine Sauna Stools for Finnsauna Lagerholm, Finland 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Sauna stools have been in use for centuries, predominantly in Japan and in Finland. While this form of furniture is mostly a utilitarian object, vintage sauna stools - like this set of four - from these countries are artisanal, beautiful pieces. From Antti Nurmesniemi’s sauna stool (which is part of the MoMA’s collection) to the Japanese Hinoki stools, these vintage wooden pieces are perhaps even more treasured today than in the 50s. Sauna stools are traditionally used as a perch while washing up in the bathhouse before entering the soaking tub. They also make good shower stools or bath-side caddies also because the woods used - pine in this case - are naturally bacteria- and mildew-resistant and withstand humidity well. Stools traditionally have a simple, functional construction, however, these Finnish stools have elaborately carved tops that move beyond the strictly functional role. The tops are composed of four interconnecting parts in a shape that resembles a Celtic knot. These individual parts are connected by two dowel pins to each other leaving the design airy and functional as water has an easy way to flow through. The legs are in a simple, slightly tapered form to support the sitter with similar dowel pins connecting them to the seats. These mid-century sauna stools were made for Finnsauna Lagerholm...
