About the Item
An elegant Napoleon III style giltwood rope stool with a circular padded seat upholstered in a red velvet fabric. Gorgeous gathers adorn the outer edge of the seat, flanked by rope-like and scalloped edge trims. After a design by Fournier, one of the leading upholsterers during the second half of the 19th century, the stool rests on four gilt twisted rope legs with simulated knots to the stretcher and the feet, also ending on casters. The extravagant design of this 19th century rope stool, with its lavish combination of gilt and red characteristic of Napoleon III style, illustrates the taste of the period for opulent interiors.
