Postsparkasse Stool by Otto Wagner & GTV

About

Extreme shape synthesis. Minimalism, exclusivity and an eye for detail. The "Postsparkasse" series was designed in 1906 by Otto Wagner for the headquarters of the Post Office Savings Bank in Vienna, and represents a clear expression of modern Viennese art. The solid bent beechwood structure is both embracing and ergonomic. Aluminium embellishment. This item introduces a new concept to the "Postsparkasse" series: the use of wood with a square, not round cross-section, to create a more rigorous design. The range comprises an armchair and a stool. Pricing reflects Postsparkasse Stool in stained finish. Please inquire for seat and finish variations and pricing.

About The Maker

Wiener GTV Design

Wiener GTV Design

View Profile
Michael Thonet (1796-1871) and his five children were the most successful manufacturers of furniture in the Industrial Age. In the Hapsburg capital, Michael Thonet decided to abandon the more traditional technique of glued lamellar wood in favour of the industrial chemical – mechanical steam bent process. This innovation led him to begin producing wooden furniture, presenting a collection of elegant, yet practical designs that could be manufactured on a larger scale. He immediately supported this with a distribution and sales network that was capable of penetrating any market. It was during this time that products such as chair No. 1 designed for the famous Viennese Palais Schwarzenberg made their début, gaining fame as ‘typically’ Thonet, and from which many other models were then designed, up to and including the classic chair No. 14. The company’s use of high technology and production techniques, together with widespread fame and a growing reputation, even encouraged the most important Viennese architects to design new products. The tangible and intangible intrinsic value of GTV is expressed in the Wiener GTV Design brand, engraved on a coin embedded in the structure of each single piece: a precious detail that certifies authenticity, originality and quality.
