Stool made in Stockholm about 1790

About the Item

A Gustavian stool made in Stockholm about 1790. The stool is hand crafted with an elegantly leaf shaped border. The stool has fine originally paint with much of indigenous textures remains. Gustavian style was the leading style in Swedish architecture, decor and crafts during the Gustavian era, inspired by French Neoclassicism. The style was established in the 1780s. The period is named after King Gustav III of Sweden, who spent a great deal of time at Versailles in 1771. When he returned home to Sweden, he brought with him a love of French neoclassical style. Gustavian furnitures are very popular in especially England but also in France and in US.
