Museum Grade Sculpted Tall Oak 2-Drawer Writing Windsor Chair / Desk, C.1890s

About the Item

The Comb-Back, spindle and brace back Windsor Writing chair / Desk features a traditional sack-back style Windsor with a comb. It includes a hand sculpted saddle seat , with arms made of a single, steam-bent piece of wood. This particular piece uses the Rhode Island style legs with a bulb at the bottom of the baluster (circa 1780-1800). Like many writing-arm Windsor chairs, this is an adaptation of a normal Windsor with a writing paddle substituted for the right arm. A Rhode Island style arm support matches the rest of the chair's design. This chair desk features tapered joinery, weight on the seat of the chair causes the joints to strengthen not loosen as is the case in traditional tenon joinery. The strength and stability of the Windsor makes them a treasured American classic. Every spindle is rived and shaved on a shave horse to ensure the grain is left unbroken from end to end. This traditional process is repeated on the chair's back before steaming and bending. The legs are set using a traditional tapered lock joint which increases the chair's stability. Crackled drawer pulls do not seems to be original original. The brace back back spindle base has been reinforced for grater stability. This true museum grade gem measures 37" in width, 24" in depth and stands 50.5" tall. Seat height is 17". Writing table top is a convenient 18.5" wide x 15.5" deep. Lower drawer (under seat) measures 9.75"W x 12.75"W. Top drawer under the writing table pad measures 5.75"W x 9.5"D. Actual seat is 21.5"W x 16"D. W3L321222
