Pair of American Painted Lowback Windsor Antique Chairs, Early 20th Century

About the Item

NEAR PAIR OF AMERICAN LOWBACK WINDSOR ARM CHAIRS Late 19th or Early 20th Century This is a positively gorgeous near pair of American Lowback Windsor Chairs, crafted during the late 19th or early 20th century with period techniques after the Philadelphia originals of a century prior. They are entirely bench made, the tooling and craftsmanship absolutely identical to 18th Century examples. The crest rail is crafted in three parts, the top set in soft grooves of the flanking arm rails over a gallery of spindles that openly tenon through the arm rails. The underside of one of the crest rails shows hand forged iron nails affixing the arm rails to the raised crest. The seats are finely carved of a solid broad plank, the bottoms deeply chamfered along the edges to lighten the visual proportions, the bottoms hand planed with light rippling to the surface from the planing blade. The legs tenon through the seat, locked in place with split wedge tenons, these visible in the soft scoop of the comfortable seat. A thin "rain gutter" outlines the gallery of spindles along the back and sides. The legs are distinct to Philadelphia work centers, the swollen cap joining through the seat over a ring-turned swollen baluster, separated from the cylindrical length of the leg with a concave ring turning, the legs terminating over ball feet. As a "near" pair, there are distinct variations between each chair - one is more worn and patinated than the other, the back feet terminating in simple tapering stumps versus a more fully developed ball foot on the other chair, the crest rail fully sunk in one while is simply rests in shallow grooves on the other and minor variations in the turnings and dimensions. The craftsmanship is simply above reproach in both chairs - they retain wonderful worn and patinated surfaces, each full of character and depth in the many layers of distressed and dirty paint under wax and shellac. The main image shows the chairs as being slightly darker than they actually are, though the other images are an accurate representation of color and hue. For anyone passionate about American Windsor chairs, this is a very fine selection indeed. Measurements: [first chair] 28 1/16" W x 17 1/2" D x 28 5/16" H, 16 1/4" H to seat; [second chair] 28 3/8" W x 17 1/2" D x 28 3/8" H, 16 9/16" H to seat Condition Report: Near pair, note the slight variations in turnings, rear feet, ever so slight difference in dimensions, etc. Minor joint separations in crest rail, both chairs remaining very sturdy and strong in all joints. Distressed painted surfaces on both chairs, each with multiple layers. Light scratches, abrasions, chips to seats and other use indicators as expected with an antique.
