Pair of Rare Windsor Jamaican Comb Back Mahogany Chairs, circa 1820s

About

Attributed to Francis Trumble. Philadelphian renowned chair maker. This pair are a rare Jamaican copy of his chairs. They are significant because very few were made, and survive. The more regular mahogany Windsor, are more common but these too are now difficult to find. The history of the design of the chairs is also of interest to American, Caribbean and British collectors and scholars. The Philadelphian Windsor chair that emerged in the 1750s was of course a version of the English Windsor of that period. They very quickly adopted their own distinct form, mainly from the work of Francis Trumble. Trumble not only supplied these chairs for the state house in Philadelphia, but also exported hundreds down to the Caribbean. It is these Trumble chairs that were the pattern for the Jamaican Windsor chair and the comb back Windsor we have here. From the 1920s American collectors went down the Caribbean and purchased those American exported chairs, and what we have left in the British Caribbean are the remnants of those chairs copied from the Philadelphian model.
