Victorian Apothecary Box

Complete 14 Glass Jars From our Apothecary collection, we are delighted to offer this Mahogany Apothecary Box. The Apothecary Box of square form made from solid Mahogany with two flush mounted handles one to the bottom drawer and one to the lid and a shaped brass escutcheon. The interior of the box contains 14 glass jars within a felt lining individually partitioned. Below the bottles is a large drawer which locks via a pull out brass pin located next to the lock plate. Once the locking pin is removed the drawer opens to reveal a selection of apothecary tools including a mortar and pestle, a measuring beaker, four small jars, two tins, a bone spoon, brass scales with weights and a bundle of labels for the jars. The Apothecary box dates to the early Victorian period circa 1845. The Apothecary box is complete with a working lock and tasselled key. Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture. Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era. Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms 'pharmacist' and 'chemist' have taken over this role.
