Antique Carved Oak Kutxa Trunk from the Basque Country, Early 1900s

About the Item

Originating from the autonomous region between France and Spain known as the Basque Country, this oak kutxa trunk was hand-carved in the early 1900s. In the Basque language, kutxa translates to “box”, which is an apt description for this small, well-carved trunk. Both sides are adorned with a square rosette with raised chamfered petals. Two similar carvings grace the front façade, but these motifs are arranged in a circular pinwheel fashion. In between are a series of geometric carvings of a rectangle with canted sides set within a circle and the still-functioning iron hasp (no key). The tall block legs provide a high profile, with the front two legs embellished with a repeating foliate motif. A perfect bedroom accessory for storing blankets, pillows, or linens, our kutxa trunk can also be used in a living room, hallway, or bathroom.

  • Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
    Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction. The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...

  • Early 1900s Regence Style Bleached Oak Partners Desk from France
    Located in Dallas, TX
As a transitional age in French history, the Regence period is known for furniture that showcases forms of the preceding period (Louis XIV), as well as early Louis XV stylings. In the case of this bleached oak partner’s desk, the motifs are prefigures of the Rococo style of Louis XV, while still maintaining the rectilinear form often seen with Louis XIV furnishings. Hand-carved in France in the early 1900s, the oak wood has been bleached more recently, resulting in a warm, golden brown hue with some fascinating wood grains. A cavetto molding graces the top on all sides, even in the slightly recessed areas above the leg holes. Both sides of the desk have been carved identically, with three belt drawers featuring arabesque margents with foliate shells and thin molding. Similar vertical carvings flank the doors, which are rectangular panels adorned with geometric and foliate motifs. Both doors to the right of the leg hole open to reveal three pull-out drawers, while the doors to the left front three shelves. The rectilinear form is softened by eight short cabriole legs, each with a paw foot pad, beneath a sinuous apron embellished with a foliate shell medallion over thin molding. Our well-carved partner’s desk...
