Decorative Basket Handmade in Braided Birch Bark, "Hemslöjd", Sweden, 1951

About the Item

Handmade basket made in 1951 by Oscar Åhl. This wonderful basket is a great example of the traditional folk art movement "Hemslöjd" that for centuries has passed on handicraft skills from generation to generation in Scandinavia. The basket is made from pinewood and fully decorated with carefully braided bark from birch trees attached with brass nails. Could be used to store objects, for example clothing, linen or yarn. "Hemslöjden", the National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies is a an organisation, which for over a hundred years has worked to highlight the value of creative handicrafts. The association includes both regional and local handicraft societies.
