A Sober Directoire period "Coffre" with a hand-carved front panel in the form of repeating squares with it's original iron forged hardware. The piece conveys both traditional and modern Brutalist sensibilities with Minimalist front, rough hand hewn wood, handmade nailheads and prominent hand dove-tail construction. Size is practical and useful for storage as an armoire or cupboard while using the top for seating or as a coffee table, console or sofa table or for placement of objects. The Directoire period was the forerunner for the French Art Deco and Modern movement because of its pure, sober lines and forms.
