Large Antique Silver Chest, English, Oak, Iron Bound, Campaign Trunk, Victorian

About the Item

This is a large antique silver chest. An English, oak and cast iron bound campaign trunk, dating to the mid Victorian period, circa 1850. Thomas de Grey, the second Earl de Grey (1781 - 1859) was a Tory politician in 19th century Britain. His daughter Ann de Grey married George Cowper (the 6th Earl Cowper) whose son Henry Cowper (1836 - 1887) entered parliament for the Liberal party. Not to be confused with the Earl Grey title of nobility, the 2nd Earl Grey - Charles - was a Whig prime minister during the reign of William IV (in office 1830-1834). Stout and bold, a superior antique chest with a fascinating history Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order Select oak stocks show fine grain interest and deep caramel hues Cast iron strapping shows a delightfully weathered appearance The deep lid held closed by long strap clasps and secured by an inset lock – key present Upon opening to the clean interior, the lid held open by an internal folding rest Engraved plaque to the front reads 'Earl de Grey, No.10' Dressed with pairs of cast iron drop handles to either end This is a dashing antique silver chest, with an apparent political provenance and an inviting aged appearance. Of excellent size and desirable construction, ideal for the foot of the bed or as a distinctive coffee table. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.
