Mid-20th Century Teak Chest on Wheels from Java. Original Color and Hardware.

About

Mid-20th century teak chest on wheels from Java. Original color and hardware. Measures: 56" wide x 21" deep x 33" tall. Offered by Bruce Hughes. Called Gerobok in Java these large chests are used to store valuables and textiles, and are treasured for the quality of their teak and the beauty of their carvings. The piece comprises a large teak trunk set in to a teak base, carved in the front, supporting four wooden wheels. Each of the four sides of the chest, as well as the bottom, and the patinated top, are made from a single thick plank of teak. This Gerobok preserves its original color and much of the original hardware. The key to the front lock is, unfortunately, missing. Condition: The piece is in good condition. Water marks and some distressing of the finish on the top reflect its age and the years of use to which it was put. Some of the original rivets and nail heads have been lost, but the original handles and hinges have been preserved. Structurally the piece is in excellent condition. Dimensions: 56 inches wide by 21 inches deep by 33 inches tall. (Please note, we have left the wheels in their original state, but can buff and wax them if you prefer.).
