1930's Ralph Cahoon Decorated Pine Blanket Chest with Family & Museum Provenance
Located in Nantucket, MA
Ralph Cahoon Decorated Pine Two Drawer Blanket Chest with Family and Museum Provenance, mid 1930s, a late 18th or early 19th Century New England pine blanket chest with hinged rectangular lid above case, over two drawers with wooden knob pulls, raised on bracket feet, hand painted by famous Cape Cod artist Ralph Cahoon in the manner of Swedish folk art "Dalmalning." The decoration features colorful stylized figures, buildings and flowers in yellow reserves on a blue ground. The chest is inscribed "Alice and John" and was in fact a wedding present from Ralph to his sister Alice Cahoon Atwood. This chest is an early example of Ralph Cahoon's interest in the folk painting tradition from central Sweden, and appears to have preceded the stylized Pennsylvania Dutch Americana folk art he painted for his wife's family business. The piece remains in very good condition - structurally very sound, and the paint strong and bright, with a small amount of scuffs and scrape exposing the underlying primer. The chest became the property of Cape Cod antiques...

Folk Art Decorated Chest, circa Late 1940s
Located in Nantucket, MA
Vintage Folk Art Decorated Wooden Chest or Footlocker, formerly the traveling chest of Big Band and cabaret singer Betty George, circa late 1940s to early 1950s, having an intricate geometric painted decoration reminiscent of the South Seas. The interior has a lift-out tray with two compartments closed by sliding lids. The chest has iron side bail handles and is mounted with casters. The lid bears the painted inscription "Miss Betty George." The chest was obviously well used. The exterior is well scuffed and worn, but remains solid and strong, and the decoration remains very vibrant and nicely patinated. The interior is exceptionally well kept and bright, although one glue block is missing that helps support the tray. Measures: 12-1/2 in H x 31-1/2 in L x 16 in W Provenance: Miss Betty George was born in Manchester, NH in 1926. Thought quite a beauty in her home town, she went to New York and she sang with Big Bands including those of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw...
