18th Century George II English Mahogany Bookcase

About the Item

A Mid 18th Century English Mahogany Bookcase or Cabinet c.1760 This cabinet, produced around the transition between the reigns of King George II and III, consists of a segmented interior behind two glazed doors in the upper section and a similarly divided lower section behind panelled cupboard doors. Each section with a variety of adjustable shelves, the sides of the cabinet with grooves to allow the shelves to be set at any one of a vast number of heights. The cabinet is of plain form but the finely moulded cornice and nicely constructed plinth base, as well as the refined shelving arrangements and nicely moulded shelves, are signs of the quality of the cabinet work. The metalwork is also very fine, the original lock is a lovely piece of engineering, as are the bolts to secure and release the cupboard and glazed doors. Inside the bottom section of the cabinet are two paper labels, one referring to the use of the subjunctive in French and the other relating to the chemical composition of water and air. The writing on these labels is certainly old but probably not 18th century, perhaps 19th century. The timber used in this cabinet is of very high quality and has acquired the bronze-like finish that mahogany can achieve through time and polishing. A very practical piece that could be used as a display cabinet or bookcase and provides a large amount of configurable storage space.

  • Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase
    Located in Gloucestershire, GB
An Exceptional Quality Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase with the Finest Possible Veneers and Wonderful Carving Throughout. This superb bookcase features the best quality mahogany veneers laid on to an oak carcase with solid mahogany doors, all expensive features that were only employed by the best workshops when money was no object. The shaped cornice and the panelled lower doors suggest a gothic inspiration but this is handled with real delicacy which was often not the case with later 19th century gothic revivalism which could be overbearing and overpowering to the eye. Designed for the display of fine books, porcelain or objects, the top section of the bookcase is largely plain, allowing the fine veneers to shine in conjunction with small carvings on the pilasters and a number of finely executed mouldings. The lower section is where the decorative scheme becomes more pronounced, small acanthus carvings on the pilasters framing the spectacular panelled doors which are executed in particularly high relief. Even here where the decoration is more prominent, the grain of the mahogany catches the eye first as it is so beautifully figured and of excellent colour. The pilasters on this lower section are carved so as to simulate partially octagonal columns of obvious gothic inspiration and there are pull out reading and writing slides concealed in the frieze between the upper and lower sections. The doors in the base section open to reveal simple cupboards...
