19th Century French Hunt Bookcase in Stripped Oak

About the Item

19th Century French Hunt Bookcase in Stripped Oak is a monumental work of the wood sculptor's art! Over eight feet tall, it starts at the top with a double tier of carved foliates and egg & dart on the crown overlooking a bonnet that is lavished with laden grapevines and centered with a cluster of fruit, all flanked by a pair of lush rectangular rosettes on the corners. Just underneath is the upper display tier, flanked by corbels on each corner under which appear grapevines and fruit to complement the bonnet above. In between, boldly carved molding with an interior run of crenelation accented with grapevine surrounds generous glazing, allowing one to view the four surfaces within featuring three adjustable shelves with carved trim on the front face. The lower tier which juts out a bit, is trimmed with demilune gadrooning, and fitted with two drawers carved with grapevines that serve as the drawer pulls, also flanked by rosettes positioned over corbels, grapevines and fruit just like the upper tier on a shortened scale. The two lower cabinet doors are wonderful works of sculpture, with matching carved frameworks surrounding the fruits of a successful fishing trip set on a backdrop of marsh grasses and cattails with ribbon, while the right side reflects a profitable bird hunt with a snipe atop oak leaves with ribbon. Doors open to reveal capacious storage, and the base is carved with trim to match the crown at the very top, supported by bun feet. Even the sides have been beautifully carved intaglio style making this keepsake incredibly appealing from all angles! Painstakingly stripped using our proprietary process that retains the patina and sheer natural beauty of the old wood, all performed by our expert in-house staff.
