19th Century French Rotating Bookcase by Terquem, Paris

About the Item

A French bibliotheque tournante, or revolving bookcase made by Terquem, Paris. Made of solid mahogany with brass inlay trim, this bookcase has three shelves with adjustable dividers to accommodate books of various sizes. The top is an adjustable lectern with a red leather lined drop front pull-out and two circular shelves that hinge open on each side to place a lamp or candle holder. The center rack pivots on a fixed axis within a sturdy turned spindle frame and has a bottom latch to lock it in place. Rolls smoothly on castors, perfect for a library or study (books pictured are not included). In good condition, but missing brass inlay on the legs and on the top. A brass pull was added where there used to be a lock and key. Label of maker: Bibliotheque Terquem, 19 Rue Scribe, Paris. Founded in 1877, the company exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 and was known for their innovative revolving shelves and fine quality furniture and desk accessories.
