Antique Louis Philippe Bibliothèque in Stripped Walnut, Original Glass, C. 1850
About the Item
Featuring clean lines that are synonymous with period Louis Philippe furniture, this stately bibliothèque was hand-carved in France, circa 1850. The finish on the walnut has been stripped more recently, revealing a very pleasing golden brown color and some striking grain patterns. An interesting detail is that all of the doors have been carved with a tongue and groove joinery that necessitates the doors being closed simultaneously in order for the ridged area to slot into the dado.
Standing at eight and three-quarter feet tall, the bibliothèque has a commanding presence. The crown has stepped-out molding with a protuberance in the center and at each corner that offers subtle visual change to the rather rectilinear appearance. Beneath are four tall glassed-in doors with thin molding with rounded corners. Each door has two panes of glass (original) fronting four full-length (and adjustable) shelves. At the base of the doors and aligned with the crown protrusions high above, are three partial, curvaceous bolections.
The upper and lower sections are separated by quarter-round molding over cavetto. Once again, four doors with thin molding comprise the lower body, this time opening to reveal a single full-length shelf. Beneath the doors is a thick apron with a low profile that is embellished by stepped-out molding with round finials at both corners. A fantastic example of a large case piece of Louis Philippe furniture, our stripped walnut bibliothèque can be used as intended in a library or office. It would also make a unique pantry or storage piece for a kitchen or dining room.
