A British Colonial Art Deco Teak Bookcase with Lower Storage

About the Item

This impressively book cabinet was made from solid Teak wood and dates to the 1940's. The cabinet is made in two sections; an upper part with glass doors and four levels for display of books and artifacts and a lower part with solid hardwood doors concealing two levels of storage. The patina is rich and warm. The streamlined crown and rounded door mullions re classically Art Deco. During the late British empire in India and Burma much furniture was made in the Art Deco Style using local hardwoods and native furniture builders. Art Deco was the word's first truly global furniture style, and it embodied the modern belief in progress. since teak wood is naturally resistant to insects and moisture, a surprisingly large amount of it has survived, especially in Burma, now Myanmar. Restored and re-varnished. Glass Panes are new. Rangoon, c.1940.
