Gillows Of Lancaster Gothic Revival Bookcase

About the Item

A handsome late 19th century Gillows bookcase. Crafted from fine quality mahogony with glazed panels in the gothic style. The bottom cabinet doors are skilfully moulded with arched fretwork tying in with the glass above. There is delicate cornice moulding to the top of the bookcase and two side columns. The inclusion of a carved shielded crest to the top of the piece suggests this may have been a private commission, as supported by the superior quality of the workmanship. Excellent colour and patination. Gillows Of London has been referenced by Jane Austin the Great British novelist and is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, attracting Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. The firm was founded around 1730 by Robert Gillows and went on to create furniture for Londons wealthiest upper classes. Today may of his pieces reside in museums throughout the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand with demand for Gillow designs such as Gothic Revival.
