A Rare Oak Arts & Crafts Period Bookcase By Shapland & Petter Of Barnstaple

About the Item

A rare oak Arts & Crafts period bookcase by Shapland & Petter. The upper section with a projecting inverted breakfront cornice above the concave frieze "READING MAKETH A FULL MAN", copper embossed motto. The three glazed rectangular doors each with wonderful original stylised leading which open to reveal two adjustable internal bookshelves. The lower section with a slightly serpentine shaped solid oak top in beautifully quarter sawn oak, above an arrangement of two long and three short rectangular oak lined drawers, which are flanked by two rectangular panelled doors with central linen fold carved square panels and typical arts and crafts patinated copper strap hinges. The drawers also retaining the original arts and crafts patinated handles and escutcheons. Supported on square stile feet and constructed throughout in high quality solid oak including the linings and backboards. Made by the renown cabinet makers of this period Shapland & Petter Of Barnstaple, a similar on e illustrated in Daryl Bennetts Shapland & Petter Ltd Arts and crafts furniture page 108. English circa 1900 Dimensions: 82.5" high x 60" wide x 19" deep (shelves 10" deep) The Shapland and Petter factory was established by cabinetmaker Henry Shapland (1823 – 1909), following a trip to America in 1848. While there, he saw an ingenious new machine which he realised could be used for cabinetmaking. Upon his return to Barnstaple, he reproduced the machine from notes he’d made and set up business in a mill. He later met Henry Petter, an accountant, and together they achieved rapid success. In 1888 the mill burned down. Undeterred, they moved to larger premises. The same factory now produces high-quality joinery.
