About the Item

About Antique lawyer's cabinets with glass doors that open and slide in from the top. The whole piece is modular consisting of 6 pieces: the top, the bottom and four cabinets that all interlock. The base has as an early "Globe-Wernicke" label with "299" which indicates the finish. According to Globe-Wernicke's catolog, a "quarter sawed figured oak, deep rich Mahogany finish, highly polished, brass oxidized hardware". There are two identical available. Only one is pictured. Price is per piece. Creator: The Globe-Wernicke Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. Date of manufacture: circa 1905. Materials and techniques: Oak, glass, brass, mahogany finish. Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. All glass front doors open properly on both cabinets. Dimensions: H 63 in. x W 33.75 in. x D 11 in. History: The Globe-Wernicke Company was created when the Globe Company of Cincinnati, Ohio purchased the Wernicke Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1899. The parent company, Globe, had been founded in 1882 by Henry Yeiser and is best known for their vertical filing cabinets and sectional filing cabinets. The bookcases produced by these companies are usually called “barrister” bookcases because of their popularity with lawyers. However, the preferred term used by Wernicke is “elastic” bookcase. The reason for this was to call attention to the flexible nature of the bookcases, in that homeowners could purchase a small bookcase set, and then at a later time purchase additional sections to expand the case as their libraries grew. Later, G-W referred to them as “sectional bookcases”. Each bookcase consisted of a base section, one or more book or other sections, and a top section arranged in a stack to form a bookcase that could meet the requirements of nearly any customer and location.
