A stunning 18th century French Empire period enfilade buffet, circa early 1800s, handcrafted of solid walnut by talented artisans in Lyon, the culinary capital of France, renowned for its furniture production during the 18th century. Its style is among the most celebrated and successful provincial styles, including Provençal, Normand, and Bordelaise. Having a rectangular top above four drawers over four panel doors divided by carved pilasters topped with carved lozenge motifs, the doors of this Lyonnaise buffet open to reveal a spacious interior with a single shelf. Raised on tall carved block feet. An elegant piece that is impressive as well as practical and perfect for entertaining. The wonderful proportions and the rich character of the wood with its beautiful French polish make this versatile antique French buffet a fantastic focal point that will bring a distinguished presence wherever it's placed. The French word "enfilade" in architecture refers to a series of salons or rooms, formally aligned with one another, that provide a sweeping view through the entire suite of rooms, where one walked "on file" or "en filade." The enfilade served to organize space and vision and is a common feature found in many of France's grand palaces from the Baroque period. The term later became associated with large scale buffets that had more than two cabinet doors.
