About the Item

The sheer design exuberance seen on this antique French Louis XV walnut buffet credenza with its original marble top from France, circa 1780 is delightful. Of course this buffet was meant to function for both display, serving and storage but the beauty of the walnut timber and the excellence of the carving are combined into a magnificent piece of antique French furniture. The drawers and cabinet doors are each of a thickness only seen during the eighteenth century when it was essential to use bold dimensions in order to take advantage of the natural light thrown into an interior by a blazing fire and lighted candles. Naturally produced organic light was always taken into account by a cabinet maker and the owner of this buffet was able to light up the room sufficiently to appreciate the fine details of this French buffet credenza. There are four drawers and three cabinet doors all embellished with curvaceous elements that invite a touch of the hand. Please notice the balanced and orderly arrangement of the individual openings which reflect the influence of the neoclassical taste that became popular at the end of the eighteenth century. This antique buffet credenza is notable for its apron featuring an open work carving in the centre and the graceful slope of the curves as the apron extends outward to the cabriole legs. Even the sides have a sense of balance and harmony with the serpentine shape of the inset oak panels. The gleam of the patina is marvellous and is the result of years of waxing and polishing. The original marble top follows the curve of the cabinet and has a bold profile with a bevelled edge. Look closely at the photograph of the back of the marble slab to see the striations indicating hand cut marble. This is a tour de force of provincial French cabinetmaking and remains a remarkable desirable piece for a modern home.
