Antique French Painted Buffet Bas d'Armoire Credenza France circa 1830

About the Item

A tall antique French Restauration period bas d'armoire buffet credenza with the original painted finish from France circa 1830. This wonderful piece of country cabinetry gives the essential sense of living in rural France. The pair of cabinet doors are rectangular in shape with the recessed inner panel consisting of a series of vertically placed pieces of timber. By being set back slightly from the front they capture light and create a shadow effect along the edges of the doors. When the doors are fully open they lay flat against the front of the bas d'armoire to allow full and easy access to the entire interior for maximum storage on the two shelves inside. The right door has a lock and key but there is a distinctive feature above the right door that is a major clue as to how this cabinet was used on a daily basis. Placed just slightly off centre above the right door is a turn latch made of wood that when in the downward position secures the doors without having to engage the lock. This latch indicates that the bas d'armoire stored items that needed to be accessed and used every day. The simplicity of the construction with its straight board sides and flat board top that extends slightly over the body all indicate the craftsman was most interested in economy of material and construction. The original painted finish has a beautiful warmth on this cabinet and shows the passage of time achieved by daily use in a busy household. The term "bas d'armoire" describes a low cabinet without drawers which is essentially a low armoire. This very specific description was necessary when a written inventory was needed so any person reading the list would be able to identify a piece without having seen it before.
