French 18th Century Louis XV Cherry Enfilade with Single Drawer and Three Doors
About the Item
A French 18th century Louis XV cherry enfilade with single drawer over three doors. This French long buffet from the second half of the 18th century features a rectangular three-plank top with canted corners over a delicate rais-de-coeur frieze running along the three sides. The pegged construction of this French piece is perfectly done. The harmonious facade embodies the care the maker took in creating it. The hand-cut dovetailed drawer is placed in the centre, above a nicely carved door. To maintain this rhythm without becoming monotonous, the cabinet-maker flanked the central part with taller doors decorated with simple raised panels in their upper section, mimicking the central drawer. This ingenious solution creates a subtle movement which brings life to the facade. All in discretion, the moldings on the doors transition from a uprising scroll in the centre to downward scrolls on the sides. The beautifully scalloped apron is raised on two scrolled legs in the front and straight in the back. We are here merely in the presence of the supreme Louis XV elegance. France developed its rocaille taste in a more subtle manner than the Rococo counterpart found in the surrounding countries. This French 18th century, enfilade is an excellent example of the subtlety and grace of the time. The great patina of the cheerywood and gorgeous Silhouette make this enfilade a wonderful choice for any living or dining area.
