French Henry II Castle Dresser Sideboard credenza Buffet - Renaissance - 19th

About the Item

Wonderful castle sideboard, dresser, cabinet, sideboard-credenza in richly carved oak with two-bodies with openings with 2 doors in the upper part and 4 doors in the lower part. The piece of furniture has 3 drawers carved into belts. The 3 drawers are almost invisible on the central belt, they are secret drawers. Richly carved with lions, scrolls of foliage, plants, cornucopia and fruit. The 2 lion heads at the upper ends of the furniture are fascinating, and almost seem to be moving because they are so well executed. The sculptures are delicate and fine, yet deep. Beautiful storage space with doors and drawers and display space in the credenza. Henry II style, Renaissance, Renaissance Revival. French Renaissance furniture is directly inspired by the decorative arts of the Italian quattrocento born in the 15th century. The extreme richness of the beautiful wooden sculptures characterizes this new French style with its still stiff forms. Carpenters, sculptors and architects borrow its varied ornamentation from antiquity. The shapes take up the architectural elements of the column, pilaster, cornice and pediment. Arabesques, foliage, grotesques and bas-relief medallions with mythological scenes or portraits cover the facades and uprights of French Renaissance furniture. The Henry II style extends from 1550 to 1589. It includes the end of the reign of Francis I, the reigns of Henry II (1519-1559), Francis II (1559-1560), Charles IX (1560-1574) and ends with the death of Henry III in 1589. With his wife, the Italian Catherine de Medici, Henri II favored the development of the pure French antique style. The carpenter thinks of the piece of furniture as a whole, like a small building of classic architecture. The "DuCerceau" sideboard is composed at the top of a small cabinet framed by two niches with arches, a beautiful gadrooned belt with drawers and decorative columns on the front. This piece of furniture is in the style of Jacques Androuet Du Cerceau. For easier delivery and set-up, the buffet can easily be dismantled into 2 parts. It will reassemble just as easily.
