Louis XVI neoclassical style marble-top mahogany buffet, France, circa 1890. The beautiful symmetry seen in this buffet showcases the desire for visual balance and beauty first developed during the reign of Louis XVI (1774-1792) in France. The bow front shaped façade features four cabinet doors each with an extravagantly patterned panel of mahogany enclosed within the recessed rectangular moulding. The brilliance of the grain pattern with its resemblance to arching flames is considered to be the most desirable cut of mahogany available anywhere in the world and is certainly the most distinctive feature of this buffet. The centre front is configured with two drawers above two cabinet doors with circular ring pulls on the drawers while the cabinet doors each have an oval escutcheon (lock plate) that guides the key into each individual lock. Please notice that all four doors and drawers each have a curved shape in order to follow the bow front façade. The cabinet doors on the far left and right of the buffet possess a more dramatic curve as do the drawers which when open pivot outward when opened. This unusual movement of the drawers ensures the entire drawer is available for storage as well as remaining stabile and secure. There is a unique detail to the centre drawers as they are separated by a rectangular divide that has the same escutcheon as the cabinet doors. When the key is engaged in this lock both drawers remain closed and may only be opened when the key unlocks them. The vertical sections that divide the cabinet doors all feature a purely Louis XVI fluted motif with grooves that ascend from top to bottom. The buffet stands upon four legs used not only for support but also as design elements as the front two legs are cylindrical in shape while the back legs are tapered squares with a recessed centre on the sides. The bow front shaped marble top is original to the buffet and has a corresponding bow front profile with both a moulded edge as well as a section that extends outward in direct proportion to the vertical grooved supports that flank the centre cabinet doors. Refined in appearance and highly functional for both serving and storage this buffet sideboard is an essential piece of gracious decoration in any interior.
