A large mid century period Karelian Birchwood Austrian buffet cabinet with the original Lucite knobs circa 1950. This handsome three door cabinet inspired by the designs of Milo Baughman is entirely focused on the exotic nature of the striking birch wood that originated in the Karelian forest that extends across the border between Finland and Russia. The clean linear shape of this cabinet is perfectly suited to show off the grain of this unique timber that benefits from broad planes to stretch across as opposed to carved decoration. The cabinet stands upon a rectangular plinth base that is slightly recessed so the entire structure appears to be weightless while the top, both sides and the entire front are sheathed in the gorgeously patterned birch wood. The three cabinet doors retain their original spherical Lucite knobs and keys for the individual locks. The entire interior is lined with a pale timber and fitted with individual drawers on the left and right as well as a multitude of shelves all accessible for storage. The brilliant finish accentuates the organic pattern of the birch wood that has been a favourite timber since the early days of the nineteenth century when it was used extensively in St. Petersburg as well as other Northern European centres of furniture production. Karelian birch made a deep impression on makers of Biedermeier furniture as its pale and luminous colour and uniquely patterned grain had never been seen before. The exclusive nature of this wood that only comes from this one area of the world continues to fascinate and create desirability.
