About the Item

A neoclassical Louis Philippe style mahogany buffet from France c. 1875 with a painted and gilded decorative finish. The handsome simplicity of the design elements of this buffet give it the versatility to be used in both contemporary and traditional interiors. Please look at the balance of the two cabinet doors placed directly beneath the pair of drawers above and how the circular pulls of the drawer handles are placed symmetrically above the raised panels in the centre of each cabinet door. The front corners of the buffet have a canted corner profile with the flat edge placed at a fourty five degree angle to the front and sides. This canted profile is continued at the front corner edge of the top serving surface as well as the apron and feet that support the entire buffet. The edge of the top has a moulded edge that is echoed by the more narrow moulding placed in a horizontal line between the drawers and cabinet doors that extends across the front and the sides. Both of the drawer fronts and the ncabinet doors are also embellished with a moulded edge around the perimetre of the drawers while it is the recessed panel on each cabinet door that is outlined with moulding. Interestingly these drawers have an unusual lock mechanism. Please use the zoom feature on our website to look closely at the space between the drawers. There is a small inset brass escutcheon (the metal plate that guides the key through the timber so it is not scratched) that frames the keyhole. When the key is inserted and the lock is engaged the bolts move sideways to lock both drawers simultaneously. Once the drawers are locked they may not be opened by pulling on the handles but must be released using the key. The pair of cabinet doors are set slightly within the frame of the cabinet and the right door has the same escutcheon as seen between the drawers. There is a raised piece of vertical moulding that covers the seam where the doors meet in the middle and this strip of moulding is attached to the right door so that when the ndoors are open there is full access to the interior. The centre panels of each door feature a large rectangular medallion with a quarter circle cutout at each of the four corners. Because the medallion was actually carved into the flat timber its raised profile assumes a decorative impact that a recessed or plain surface would not possess. The pair of doors open to a ninety degree angle and reveal an interior for storage bisected with a shelf. The entire buffet is elevated with shaped feet at the front and partially hidden legs at the back and these legs are set beneath a horizontal apron spanning the entire front and sides. The use of the matte black paint along with the gilding of the details create a chic effect. Overall the intriguing combination of geometric lines with a few curves results in a compelling piece of French cabinetry that is as beautiful and functional today as when it was first built.
