About the Item

A tall painted buffet/ display cabinet from England c. 1930. Please notice the enticing form of this unusual piece. Both of the cabinet doors on the left and right are bowfront shaped and flank a pair of cabinet doors in the centre that feature elegant gothic style glazing bars. The top surface also follows this profile with bowfront sections above the outer cabinet door receding in to a straight line above the glass fronted doors. Below the top there is a bold frieze carved in a pattern known as "Etruscan wave" or Vitruvian" Scroll". This pattern first appeared during the early Greek era and always is used as a reference to the classical past. Notice that on the sides this pattern is repeated but in paint as opposed to carving. The entire piece has its original painted finish visible on the front, top and sides. Of particular importance are the two bowfront doors with their English versions of Oriental lacquer scenes. For many years the great shipping companies had imported ravishing examples of lacquer work that were exceedingly expensive and desirable. English artisans experimented for years to duplicate the translucent effect and ended up achieving a technique known as "japanning". This term was used to distinguish local pieces from their more accomplished imports. The motifs on both doors include figures set in exotic landscapes, flying birds and flowering trees as well as examples of temples and dwellings all set off with paint and gold leaf. The raised texture of these scenes was accomplished by the use of gesso. When viewed from the front the various configurations appear to zig zag from top to bottom and create a sense of movement across the surface. There is a painted border framing the scenes and both doors and this same border appears on the top along the perimeter as well. Both sides also have painted scenes in the same style. This beautiful buffet is able to provide storage behind the closed doors, display precious objects behind the glass doors and serve from the top. A wonderful decorative example of English craftsmanship.
